Winter Garden County Seat

About Carrizo Springs, TX

Welcome to Carrizo Springs, the county seat of Dimmit County, Texas, a South Texas ranching and energy town in the Winter Garden region along U.S. Highway 83.

Carrizo Springs is the county seat and largest city of Dimmit County, Texas, in the brush country of South Central Texas. The 2020 census counted 4,892 residents, while the county as a whole has about 8,600 people. The city lies on U.S. Highway 83, a major South Texas corridor, roughly between Laredo and Uvalde. The town is the oldest in Dimmit County. It was founded in 1865 by a group of fifteen families from Atascosa County led by Levi English, drawn to the area's natural springs. The name comes from those springs, which Spanish explorers described for the carrizo cane grass that grew around them. Ranching and, later, irrigated farming shaped Carrizo Springs through the twentieth century; the surrounding countryside is part of the Winter Garden region, a celebrated irrigated vegetable and onion-producing district. The early twenty-first century brought a new economic chapter. Development of the Eagle Ford Shale formation, one of the most productive oil and gas plays in the United States, swept through Dimmit County and brought drilling activity, service companies, and a surge of workers to Carrizo Springs, reshaping its growth, housing, and workforce. The city functions as the administrative and commercial center of the county, hosting the courthouse, schools, and services for the surrounding ranch country. Public education is provided by Carrizo Springs Consolidated Independent School District, whose Wildcat campuses serve students across the county. Recreation leans on South Texas traditions: the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area, managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife, offers some of the region's finest hunting for deer, javelina, and dove, and the open brush country supports ranching-related outdoor life. For residents, Carrizo Springs combines energy-sector opportunity with deep-rooted South Texas ranching and farming heritage.

City Guide

About Carrizo Springs

Real Estate & Housing

Carrizo Springs's housing stock reflects both its ranching-era roots and the Eagle Ford Shale boom. The city mixes older homes near the center with newer single-family construction, along with workforce-oriented rental housing and RV and manufactured-home communities that grew to accommodate energy-sector workers. Lot sizes are typically generous, and many homes sit on quiet, wide streets. The boom brought rapid residential development and higher demand for rentals, while surrounding ranchland offers acreage. Buyers include oil-field workers, longtime ranching families, and people drawn to South Texas's lower-density, small-town setting.

Neighborhoods

Carrizo Springs is laid out around its U.S. Highway 83 corridor and the Dimmit County courthouse, with the older grid of streets near downtown reflecting its nineteenth-century founding. Residential blocks fan out from the center, blending at the edges into brush country and ranchland. The Eagle Ford Shale boom added new subdivisions, workforce housing, and RV communities on the town's outskirts. The surrounding area is sparsely settled ranch country, with small communities like Asherton and Big Wells looking to Carrizo Springs for schools, government, and services.

Lifestyle in Carrizo Springs

Life in Carrizo Springs blends South Texas ranching and farming traditions with the energy of the Eagle Ford Shale era. The town's identity is rooted in its history as Dimmit County's oldest settlement, and county fairs, school athletics, and church life anchor the community. Residents value the open brush country, the Winter Garden's agricultural rhythms, and the proximity to hunting and outdoor recreation. For larger retail, healthcare, and air travel, residents look to Laredo, Eagle Pass, or San Antonio. The result is a hardworking, close-knit county seat with a distinctive South Texas character.

Schools & Education

Carrizo Springs Consolidated Independent School District serves the city and Dimmit County, operating elementary, intermediate, junior high, and high school campuses, including Carrizo Springs High School. The district is the county's educational anchor, and its Wildcat athletics and activities are central to community life. Enrollment reflects both longtime local families and the area's energy-sector growth. For higher education, students typically attend regional colleges in Laredo, Eagle Pass, Uvalde, and San Antonio, including Texas A&M International University and Southwest Texas Junior College, both within commuting range.

Getting Around

U.S. Highway 83 is Carrizo Springs's principal route, running north-south through the city and connecting it to Crystal City and Uvalde to the north and to Laredo and the border region to the south. State highways and farm-to-market roads link the town to Cotulla, Asherton, and the Eagle Ford oil fields that surround the county. The city sits within reach of major border crossings at Eagle Pass and Laredo, and San Antonio lies about two hours to the northeast. Most travel is by car, reflecting the region's rural, highway-centered character.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation around Carrizo Springs is rooted in South Texas's brush country. The Chaparral Wildlife Management Area, managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife, lies nearby and is regarded as offering some of the finest hunting in South Texas, with permitted hunts for deer, javelina, and dove. The surrounding ranchland supports quail and dove hunting and wildlife viewing, and the Winter Garden region's irrigated fields shape the landscape. For organized recreation, the city's parks department maintains local facilities, while Laredo and San Antonio provide larger venues and attractions within a regional drive.
